MetroHealth’s pharmacy faced a host of challenges all too familiar to health systems: escalating specialty medication requirements, payer complexity, and limited staffing significantly constrained the department. Pharmacists, intended to focus on patient care, were increasingly consumed by administrative tasks, leading to delays in therapy, worsening prior authorization approval rates, and patient abandonment.

To overcome these challenges, MetroHealth partnered with Latent, initially drawn by their ability to index the patient chart and quickly surface relevant clinical information, lab results, and provider rationale needed to streamline the prior authorization (PA) workflow.

Latent has transformed our collaboration into a true partnership, revolutionizing our prior authorization process and enabling us to expand into a comprehensive medication access and affordability team here at MetroHealth. Thanks to their innovation, we ensure that patients—regardless of socioeconomic status—receive the essential therapies they need."

Within 12 months of implementing Latent, MetroHealth achieved substantial operational and clinical gains:

- 45.1% increase in PA submission capacity without expanding headcount, allowing more patients timely medication access.

- 80% reduction in overall PA review time, from around 25 minutes to 5 minutes, accelerating patient treatment initiation.

- Optimized specialty PA clinical review time—now completed in approximately 3 minutes—enabling significantly faster patient access to specialty medications.

- 19.6% increase in prescription volume, directly improving patient access to essential medications.

- Improved PA turnaround time to 2.03 hours, enabling patients to receive therapies significantly sooner.

We needed a platform that let our pharmacists get back to patient care. Latent adapted to both our specialty and non-specialty workflows better than any other solution."

Looking ahead

Building on Latent’s success with specialty and non-specialty PAs, MetroHealth plans to further expand Latent’s capabilities to infusion PAs, appeals, and other use cases that could benefit from advanced clinical documentation. The partnership with Latent ensures the pharmacy team can adapt to growing demand without sacrificing quality or patient-facing care. Ultimately, this strategy not only streamlines workflows but also paves the way for improved treatment adherence, faster access to life saving therapies, and better health outcomes for every member of the community MetroHealth serves.
